Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Check

You must be a Surrey resident to obtain a Police Information Check (PIC) or a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector. Police Information Checks can be obtained for the purpose of volunteer work, employment, or school purposes within Canada. NOTE: We can not guarantee same day service. Each application is unique and wait times do vary.

Locations

• Surrey residents must attend in person at the front counter of the Main Detachment or a District Office
• If you reside outside of Canada and require a Criminal Record Check please visit http://www.rcmp.gc.ca/en/criminal-record-checks.
• If you reside outside of Surrey, you will need to attend your local police agency in your respective community.

Fees (change annually)

• Paid employment:To see a list of current fees, visit our Service Fees page.Methods of payment: Cash, debit, credit
• Volunteer work: no fee if you are volunteering with a not-for-profit organization. In order to have the fee waived you must provide a letter on agency letterhead from the organization. The letter must contain the following information:
  • Applicant’s name
  • Whether the applicant will be involved with or responsible for children or vulnerable people
  • Confirmation that the applicant is volunteering
  • Name and title of the person requiring the Criminal Record Check
  • Full address and phone number of the organization

  Before you attend please ensure

  • You are a resident of Surrey and can show proof of address.
  • You have two valid pieces of government-issued identification (see Acceptable Identification below)
    • Primary ID must include the applicant’s date of birth plus a current photo.
    • Secondary ID must include the same name and date of birth as the primary ID.

    Acceptable Identification

    NOTE: The BC Services Card combined with the BC Driver's Licence is only considered ONE piece of ID.

    Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector

    Vulnerable sector checks can be requested as part of a Police Information Check for volunteer or employment positions considered to be positions of trust or authority over children or vulnerable persons.

    Being in a position of trust or authority is more than just having contact with children or vulnerable persons. To meet the legal requirements for a vulnerable sector check, the nature of the position – not the person – must cause the person to have authority over, or trust of, children or vulnerable persons.

    A position of trust or authority is created when an individual's relationship with someone else has any of the following characteristics:

    • Decision-making power
    • Unsupervised access
    • Closeness inherent in the relationship
    • Personal nature of the activity itself

    It is the responsibility of the organization to assess what level of police check is required for the position. The police service will use information submitted by the applicant to determine if the position meets the legal requirements to conduct a vulnerable sector check. The position must meet the requirements of the Criminal Records Act for a vulnerable sector check in order for a police service to conduct one.

    If you require a Police Information Check with the Vulnerable Sector, you must clearly indicate if the check is for a position working with vulnerable clients, and provide the following information:

    • A description of the paid or volunteer position;
    • The name of the organization that requires the VS check;
    • The details regarding the children or vulnerable persons with whom the individual will be working;

    Some applicants may be required to submit fingerprints as part of the Vulnerable Sector search. These fingerprints will be taken at the time of the application and additional fees may apply.

    Certified Criminal Record Check

    Certified Criminal record checks are processed by way of submitting a set of electronic fingerprints to RCMP's Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS).
